Breath Awareness As The Direct Path Inward
Breath awareness is my most direct way inward. If it worked for Buddha, I mean, I guess it’s good enough for me… It begins with, you guessed it, simply becoming aware.
First, I simply notice. How is the breath expressing itself right now. I try to use words and feelings to describe it.
Then, I stay with it for a while until I really land in it. I become one with the breath.
Is the body breathing or I am breathing for the body? The fine details and borders begins to dissolve into one.
Thoughts and mind chatter begin to soften its perceived grip on my attention.
Slowly the attention goes from being exteroceptive to interoceptive until they blend into each other. I can feel a clear relief from any agitation, stress, fear, worry, stuck thought-processes and negative associations to what’s around me. I then begin to actively see the beauty around me, in people, birds, trees, buildings, whatever surrounds me. Even when I don’t feel like it.
Seeing the beauty and Spirit that flows through each living being is an amazing practice in and of itself. We wire the brain and the nervous system to feel safe and grateful.
Tip from the coach: Practice breath awareness the next time you feel agitated or stressed. Simply focus your awareness and attention on your breath as it flows in and out. See if you can notice details that are new to you. Have a warrior’s mindset but a child’s curiosity. Whenever you notice that your attention is elsewhere, simply kindly bring it back to the breath.
Good luck.
